It is traditionally a signwriters paint Federal Laws in USA has now phased out the use of Lead in its manufacture.
This came about because some of the old boys , paletted the brush between your fingers as the paint became absorbed into the bloodstream and in later life was believed to contribute towards the onset of Alzheimer's! amongst other things. This could be another reason why we are called 'pinheads'. Be wise and palette on a telephone directory or shiny magazine cover or best of all Acetate sheets.
For the uninitiated, paletting means loading your brush with paint, and wiping it back and forth on the paletting material (old Playboy magazines make this even more interesting) to ensure the paint is fully dispersed throughout the brush hairs. This ensures a good flow of paint to give a more consistent line.
If you have oiled your brush for storage, wash it out in thinners before re-using. You may need to thin the paint down to make it flow better. In America stripers generally use what are called "Dixie Cups" these are small receptacles which they use for mixing paint colours and thinning.
